#393 PHOTOWALK: CURIOSITY DOES NOT KILL THE CAT!

FEATURING DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHER IAN HOWORTH

“EMBRACE CURIOSITY, IT’S THE COMPASS THAT LEADS TO ENDLESS DISCOVERY”

Documentary photographer Ian Howorth talks about identity, curiosity and his latest book, A Country Kind of Silence. Also today, the wonder in the ordinary, we visit a tree of life on two continents and there are WISH YOU WERE HEREs from North America. We have a very vulnerable and down-to-earth honest answer to "What's your why" from one of our Extra Milers and a story about acceptance and change, plus it being the second Friday of the month, street photographer Valérie Jardin is here with Visual Stories. This month we’re talking about the thing in the sky that lights our photographs but doesn’t always choose to play nicely which also becomes the new assignment for the month of August.

Email your stories, thoughts, and pictures to the show. If you can optimize/resize photos to 2,500 pixels wide, that’s always much appreciated. If you’d like to support this show and have access to further content and the midweek Extra Mile show, we’d welcome you as an EXTRA MILER. There’s also our thriving Facebook group, a safe place to meet and talk with photographers of all interests, plus the show is featured on Instagram, VERO and Twitter.

As well as our Extra Milers, we’re also supported by our incredible friends at MPB.com who have believed in this show from the get-go; the number one platform in the UK, US and Europe (with bases in Brighton, Brooklyn and Berlin) when it comes to buying, trading or selling quality used kit online. They help us as photographers to tell our unique stories by providing a safe place to buy, trade and sell the kit we need and in doing so, we become a part of the sustainable circular economy. With guarantees upon kit purchased, buy used, spend less and get more at MPB.com.

WISH YOU WERE HERE: LEESA BURZYNSKI

Hello Neale, and greetings from Floridaland!

I recently discovered your podcast and enjoy listening to you and your guests during my early morning walks around my neighborhood in Clermont, Florida. Many thanks to you and Barney for keeping me company!

This past week I braved the Central Florida heat and visited Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, which is about 40 minutes from our home. I’m an Annual Passholder and often head over to one of the parks to take my camera for a walk. It was so hot this week though that I left my Canon in the comfort of our home and ventured out with my iPhone.

Each and every time I go to Disney, I think of my Mom who passed away nearly 5 years ago. Mom was a great Disney play date. We made many trips together to the different parks and had so many laughs! One of the last photos I took of my Mom at Disney was at the rear side of Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life (as you are walking toward ‘Asia’). This is my favorite side for photos because of the foliage, plus you can photograph your subject without stray people in the background.

Wish you were here,

Leesa Burzynski

WISH YOU WERE HERE: KELLY MITCHELL (2 CARDS)

Well, Here We Are… Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan, Canada. This trip was a Bird Tour Trip but soon you find out that it is much much more!! We also came across Mama Pronghorn Antelope and Baby. Aren’t they the cutest?!?! I’m travelling with a good friend, Laurie, she is the one who has taught me quite a bit about birds. And one of her goals for this trip was to photograph Burrowing Owls. These little owls have such character; so much fun to watch and photograph them, so they were one of the highlights of our trip. One of my goals for this trip was to photograph Meadow Larks. Meadow Larks are such handsome-looking birds with a beautiful song… I could take them all home!! Now I am running out of room on this postcard so watch for a couple more in the future. Love, Kelly

Second postcard!

Tuesday August 1, 2023. Well, part 2 of Wish You Were Here in Grasslands National Park reminds me of a theme song to Corner Gas! Ok, I know you are scratching your head; What is Corner Gas? Well, it is a Canadian TV Show that was actually based in Saskatchewan. From the songwriter Northey Valenzuela; “You can watch your dog run away, And out here it can take 3 days. I've heard every joke, I've heard everything you say. You think there's not a lot goin' on. But look closer baby, you're so wrong, And that's why you can stay so long, When there's not a lot goin' on. Not A Lot Goin' On.” Saskatchewan’s vastness blows my mind at times. The views both inside and outside of the Park are amazing, they really do seem like they go on forever. The photos do not do it justice. Love, Kelly
